Properly Reading a Recipe

Recipe books, food recipe websites and cooking shows will require you to buy the right ingredients to successfully cook a particular food. Good food is not just about buying the right ingredients and doing everything according to instructions. There are certain factors that you need to think about to cook the meal the right way.

Ingredients

Any recipe that you'll find will always list a number of ingredients. After all, without any ingredients you wouldn't know what to cook at all.

But not all ingredients listed in the recipe book will always be available in your local supermarket. They could be available but they might just be too expensive to be purchased just for a single meal. If you're faced with this problem, remember that there are two types of ingredients: the essential ingredients and the optional ingredients. As the name would suggest, essential ingredients are the important ingredients which will suggest the main flavor of the meal. On the other hand there are optional ingredients which can be discarded or replaced. These ingredients are often added to enhance the flavor such as adding extra spice to the food. Examine the recipe and identify the optional ingredients so that you can save and even offer a better alternative.

Preparation and Temperature

Although some ingredients in most recipes are interchangeable, the steps should still be strictly followed if you want to cook the recipe perfectly. That means you have to follow every instruction on the things that should be chopped and sliced. The recommended size and measurement of the ingredients should be followed and as we have said, every step should be followed. You may deviate from the process but only when you're already familiar with the recipe.

Another important factor that you should consider is the temperature of the ingredients as well as the cooking process. This is especially true when you are using an oven in the process of cooking. Remember that the recipe will suggest a certain temperature. That means you have to place your prepared meal in the microwave after it has reached the temperature. You have to preheat the oven so that when you use them, the desired temperature is already there. It is also important that the ingredients should be in room temperature, unless indicated. Let the ingredients from your fridge reach the room temperature before slicing them.

Time Consideration

Time is also an important factor in cooking. Like all cooking processes, time should never be compromised. You often see some jokes on TV wherein they cut the heating time in half by increasing the temperature. That may seem like a joke but you might fall into that deception. When you are asked to heat a particular ingredient, follow the instructions. In cooking, there are no shortcuts.

The success of following a recipe is on how you carefully follow the steps and secure all the ingredients. But you can also be creative in the ingredients and with the process just as long as you are already familiar with the recipe. Be sure to remember the factors previously indicated to cook the recipe the right way.
